Good to know

Short notes behind this hub — not a substitute for the ranking cards above.

Core care is a veterinary schedule, not a shopping cart

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) treats wellness exams, core vaccines, parasite control, and dental care as routine dog health — not optional add-ons. We will not score a kibble or a gadget as a substitute for a veterinarian. Rankings here are for products and services you still have to choose after that baseline.

“Complete and balanced” is a labeled claim

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) publishes nutrient profiles used on most U.S. dog food labels. A food that is complete and balanced for growth, adult maintenance, or all life stages is making a regulatory-style claim we can check. Marketing words such as “human-grade” or “ancestral” are not the same thing. When we rank food, AAFCO adequacy and feeding-trial vs formulated statements come before flavor stories.

Household cost is large and uneven

AVMA and shelter groups have long warned that lifetime cost — food, preventives, and especially unexpected illness — is the part people underestimate. That is why insurance is the first researched ranking, and why Money sits next to Health rather than as a blog afterthought.

Training methods are not all equal

AVMA and many veterinary behaviorists advise against relying on fear, pain, or shock as a default. When we rank training programs we will look for stated methods, trainer credentials, and whether the program defers aggression and medical issues to a veterinarian — not for the loudest before-and-after video.
