This hub is for the decision before the animal is in the house: adopt vs. shop, breed fit, and whether the budget and schedule are real.

Good to know

Short notes behind this hub — not a substitute for the ranking cards above.

Adopt-or-shop is a welfare question

ASPCA and AVMA both treat pet overpopulation, impulse acquisition, and poorly screened sales as welfare problems. A ranking of “where to get a pet” has to show surrender stats, screening, and contract terms — not a collage of puppies. Until we can verify those, the pages stay as explainers.

Federal licensing is not a five-star review

USDA APHIS licenses certain breeders and dealers under the Animal Welfare Act. A license means the operation is in the regulated class and subject to inspection; it does not mean the dog is healthy, socialized, or a good match. We will not treat a USDA number as a ranking badge.

Match the animal to the household, not the aesthetic

AVMA and major breed clubs publish temperament and care notes because energy, grooming, and health predispositions are real. A quiz that only asks “apartment or yard?” is not a ranking input. When we score breed tools we will look for health and time-cost questions, and for a clear “maybe don’t get this dog” outcome.

Insurance timing is part of bringing-home

U.S. pet policies routinely exclude pre-existing conditions. Waiting until after the first limp is how people discover that. That is why the researched insurance list is linked from this hub even though the category also lives under Health.
