Good to know

Short notes behind this hub — not a substitute for the ranking cards above.

Read the nutritional adequacy statement first

AAFCO’s dog and cat food nutrient profiles are what most U.S. labels mean by “complete and balanced.” The statement also names the life stage. A puppy or kitten needs a growth (or all-life-stages) claim; an adult maintenance food is not automatically enough for growth. We will score that statement before protein percentages on the front of the bag.

Recalls and safety are FDA territory

FDA CVM publishes pet-food recall and withdrawal notices. A ranking that ignores a recent, relevant recall is incomplete. We will not invent a secret lab; we will use public FDA notices and company lot information when we score safety.

Prescription diets are medical, not a flavor line

AVMA and veterinary nutritionists treat therapeutic diets as part of a diagnosis. Ranking a kidney or hydrolyzed diet as if it were a lifestyle kibble would be unsafe. Those products, when we cover them, will be labeled as veterinarian-directed — not “best tasting.”

Calories beat bowl folklore

AAFCO labels include calorie content; obesity is one of the most common veterinary nutrition problems. Automatic feeders can help with timing and portions or they can dump extra food on a schedule. The researched feeder list scores named portions, backup power, and whether a cloud plan is required to schedule meals — not Amazon stars. Power outages still starve pets if backup batteries are missing or dead.
