Good to know

Short notes behind this hub — not a substitute for the ranking cards above.

Indoor cats still need veterinary care

AVMA preventive-care guidance for cats includes exams, core vaccines, parasite control, and dental care even for strictly indoor animals. Indoor status lowers some risks; it does not zero them. We will not treat “indoor only” as a reason to skip health rankings.

Cats are obligate carnivores on a label, not a vibe

AAFCO cat food profiles require taurine and other nutrients dogs can synthesize more easily. A dog food, a homemade recipe without a nutritionist, or a vegetarian bowl can fail those needs. Future cat-food scores will start with AAFCO cat (not dog) adequacy and life-stage statements.

The box is environmental health

ASPCA and feline practitioners treat litter-box number, cleanliness, and location as medical-adjacent: many “behavior” problems are dirty boxes or uncovered medical pain. A self-cleaning box can help a household keep up; it cannot replace a veterinary workup when urination changes. Rankings will score odor control and reliability, not miracle behavior claims.

Scratching is normal cat behavior

ASPCA describes scratching as how cats mark, stretch, and condition claws. A tree or pad that a cat will actually use beats a taller unused tower. We will score stability and replaceable sisal before decorative height.
