What you need

Home & travel

Home & travel is the physical world around the animal: crates, beds, cameras, carriers, hotels, cars, boarding. Safety standards here are uneven.

Good to know

Short notes behind this hub — not a substitute for the ranking cards above.

Crates are management tools, not punishment

AVMA and many trainers treat crates as a size-right, break-safe den for rest and travel when the animal is trained to them — not as all-day storage. A ranking will include size guidance and hardware quality. It will not include “use this crate instead of walking the dog.”

Travel rules are written by carriers, not influencers

Airlines and USDA live-animal rules set carrier sizes, health certificates, and breed restrictions. A “best carrier” that does not fit under a typical seat or meet a stated airline size is not best. We will check published airline pet pages when we rank travel gear.

Hotels are policy plus fee plus refusal

A pet-friendly chain still sets weight caps, breed lists, and nightly fees that change by property. We will not rank a brand from a single flagship. Scoring will need a written national policy plus what happens at a typical property — work we have not done yet.

Cameras and GPS are not a sitter

A camera can tell you a dog is in distress; it cannot let the dog out. GPS helps after an escape; ID tags and a registered microchip (AVMA-endorsed identification) still matter. Rankings will separate gadget features from the identification baseline.
