Best Puppy Food

Pros

• hillspet.com Puppy Chicken & Brown Rice PDP 2026-09-02: recommended for puppies up to 1 year and pregnant or nursing dogs; not recommended for adult, Adult 7+, or obese-prone dogs. Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that Hill's Science Diet Puppy Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe provides complete and balanced nutrition for growing puppies and gestating or lactating adult female dogs.
• 393 kcal/cup (3747 kcal/kg). Age-banded feeding table in cups and grams. Sizes named: 1 lb, 4.5 lb, 27.5 lb, 35 lb. 7-day transition. Made in Hill’s U.S. facilities with global ingredients (company copy).
• shop.hillspet.com SKU 7133 2026-09-02: one-time $20.99 for the 4.5 lb bag; autoship $19.94 optional, not required. Same family includes Puppy Large Breed Chicken & Brown Rice on hillspet.com (over 55 lb adult, up to 18 months, 391 kcal/cup, calcium 1.16% dry matter on that PDP) — a different SKU.

Cons

• This row is the original Puppy recipe, not Large Breed. Dry-matter calcium on this PDP is 1.54%. Do not treat it as the controlled-calcium large-breed bag. Ask a veterinarian which SKU fits expected adult size.
• ‘U.S. Veterinarians’ #1 Recommended Brand’ on the PDP is marketing. We did not score it. Hill’s June 4, 2026 press page says a team of 200+ veterinarians, PhD nutritionists, and food scientists — that is not a WSAVA claim.
• Complete and balanced is a labeled claim, not a homemade recipe. Transition over 7 days as the PDP says. We are not veterinarians.

Pros

• royalcanin.com/us Medium Puppy PDP 2026-09-02: complete and balanced nutrition for medium breed puppies (adult weight 23–55 lb / 11–24 kg) up to 12 months. 100% COMPLETE AND BALANCED NUTRITION: ROYAL CANIN® MEDIUM PUPPY is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult).
• 410 kcal ME/cup (3869 kcal/kg, calculated). Feeding table by adult target weight and month of age. Bags named 4 lb ($7.00/lb → $27.99 one-time), 17 lb ($4.35/lb → $73.99), 30 lb ($3.67/lb → $109.99). Subscribe-and-save prices exist; single purchase is the default we scored.
• Same U.S. retail family includes Large Puppy for 56–100 lb adults up to 15 months — scored as its own row. DHA min 0.1% on the guaranteed analysis.

Cons

• Formulated, not a feeding-trial sentence. The AAFCO line includes growth of large size dogs, but the feeding directions are written for medium expected adult weight. Do not use this as a silent substitute for Large Puppy if the dog will be 56 lb+.
• 4 lb is $7.00/lb. Bigger bags cost less per pound on the same PDP. No homemade. Transition still needed; this page does not print a 7-day mix schedule in the text we captured.
• We are not veterinarians. Royal Canin size charts are starting points.

ROYAL CANIN® LARGE PUPPY is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult).
• 349 kcal ME/cup (3638 kcal/kg) — lower energy density than Medium Puppy’s 410 kcal/cup on the sibling PDP. Crude fat min 14.0% vs Medium’s 18.4%. That is the large-breed energy difference we refuse to hide inside a generic puppy row.
• U.S. shop on the same site lists 17 lb ($73.99) and 30 lb ($109.99) one-time among the pack prices on 2026-09-02. Single purchase; subscription optional.

Cons

• Formulated, not feeding-trial wording. Giant breeds above 100 lb adult are outside this 56–100 lb band — Royal Canin sells other size diets.
• The feeding-recommendations block on the PDP was thinner in our capture than Medium Puppy’s cup/gram table. Follow the bag and a veterinarian for growth rate.
• Large-breed calcium and energy are veterinary nutrition issues. This ranking is not a growth-rate protocol.

• tasteofthewildpetfood.com High Prairie Puppy PDP 2026-09-02 AAFCO Statement: Taste of the Wild High Prairie Puppy Recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult).
• 415 kcal/cup (3,656 kcal/kg calculated ME). Age-banded cup table (2–4 / 4–8 / 8–12 months and adult). Bags: 5 lb, 14 lb, 28 lb. DHA min 0.05%. Small kibble named.
• Company FAQ on the same site: they do not have a large-breed-specific recipe; puppy-specific and ALS recipes are the ones that meet large-breed puppy needs. This PDP is one of those.

Cons

• No consumer USD on tasteofthewildpetfood.com. We do not borrow Chewy or Amazon. Value is capped.
• Grain-free is a label, not a health bonus. FDA’s diet-associated DCM question is still open; this maker page does not discuss it. One honest line: grain-free is not why this row ranks.
• Formulated ALS, not a feeding-trial sentence. Adult dogs can eat it per the page; that does not make it an adult-only food, and it does not replace a large-breed veterinary plan if growth is too fast.

Pros

• iams.com Smart Puppy PDP 2026-09-02: dry puppy food with real chicken first. Recommended for small and medium breed puppies up to 12 months of age as well as pregnant or nursing dogs of all breed types. Because IAMS Puppy food is complete and balanced, you do not need to add vitamin or mineral supplements.
• Bag sizes named 3.3 / 7 / 15 lb. 4-day gradual mix-in. Omega-3 DHA named. Same maker family includes IAMS Puppy Large Breed as a separate URL — we did not mix that SKU into this row.
• Official bag photo from iams.com. Currently sold U.S. consumer page.

Cons

• AAFCO nutritional adequacy sentence is not on this PDP. The page uses ‘natural as defined by AAFCO’ on a related chicken-puppy SKU and ‘complete and balanced’ here. We do not invent a growth-profile or feeding-trial quote. Quality is scored without the AAFCO bonus.
• No kcal/cup on the PDP we captured. No maker USD. ‘Veterinarians recommend IAMS’ is marketing.
• Small and medium only up to 12 months on this recipe. Large-breed puppies need the large-breed IAMS SKU or another large-breed diet — ask a veterinarian.

• wellnesspetfood.com CORE Puppy Chicken & Turkey catalog PDP 2026-09-02: grain-free dry for puppies; smaller kibble; DHA for brain and eye development; calcium and phosphorus for bones and teeth. Guaranteed analysis includes calcium not less than 1.50%, phosphorus not less than 1.00%, EPA+DHA not less than 0.10%. Bags: 4 / 12 / 26 lb.
• Same catalog lists Large Breed Puppy Chicken & Turkey as a separate recipe — not this row.
• Official bag photo from the brand’s Salsify image used as og:image on that page.

Cons

• No AAFCO growth or ALS sentence on this PDP. Wellness publishes feeding-trial language on other company pages; we did not copy that onto this SKU. Quality without the AAFCO bonus.
• Grain-free is a label, not a bonus. Calcium min 1.50% on this GA is not a large-breed-controlled formula. Use the Large Breed Puppy recipe or another large-breed diet when expected adult size is large — that is a vet nutrition question.
• kcal/cup not in the catalog text we captured. No maker USD. ‘Veterinarians Recommend Wellness’ on the bag is marketing.
