Adopt a Pet

Why it is listed

Use Adopt a Pet when you want a free U.S./Canada shelter-and-rescue search with New Pet Alerts and a documented Rehome path. The about page prints 15k+ partners and 225k+ adoptions — that is not today’s live kennel count. Fees and screening still belong to each organization. Meet the pet. Ask about transport and medical history.

Pros & cons

Pros

• adoptapet.com and about page 2026-09-07: free pet adoption site partnering with 15,000 / 15k+ shelters and rescues across the U.S. and Canada; homepage also prints 20+ years and 223k+ adoptions while about prints 225k+ adoptions (and counting). Search filters, New Pet Alerts, and adoption advice are named on the homepage.
• adoptapet.com/new-pet-alerts: free email alerts when new pets match your criteria; Premium is $10/month for alerts up to 24 hours earlier than free. Zendesk help: Create An Alert from search results or a shelter page, including shelter-specific alerts. Homepage names AI SmartSearch. Species browse includes dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, small animals, horses, and farm animals.
• adoptapet.com/rehome: Rehome by Adopt a Pet helps dogs and cats go home-to-home with a one-time listing fee for the rehoming owner, application review, and keep-pet resource links — distinct from surrendering to a busy shelter.

Cons

• Adoption fees, screening, and transport are set by each shelter, rescue, or rehomer — Adopt a Pet’s own Terms state the site is free to use for adopters and that guidelines vary. We do not invent a national fee or a live “pets online now” count.
• Premium New Pet Alerts are optional paid ($10/mo). Free daily alerts remain. No public iOS/Android App Store URLs were printed on the adoptapet.com pages captured this pass (Terms mention mobile applications generally).
• A listing is not a veterinary exam. Meet the animal. Ask about medical history, distance, and return policy before you pay any organization fee.
