September is National Preparedness Month in the United States. For people who live with a dog or cat, preparedness is not a go-bag slogan — it is a plan for the first expensive vet visit that is not optional. We are writing this comparison in early September 2026 for that reason: new-school calendars, Labor Day travel, and rescue intake all tend to put animals in new homes right as owners start asking what a policy actually reimburses.

Pet Standings ranks pet insurance as the only product category we have fully verified from public policy pages. The six companies below are Embrace, Healthy Paws, Trupanion, Fetch, Lemonade, and Nationwide. We do not add Pumpkin, Pets Best, ASPCA Pet Health, Figo, Spot, or MetLife to this list until we finish the same official-page checklist. If a comparison site shows ten logos, ask whether those extra names were read from the insurer or copied from another roundup.

We are the editorial team at Pet Standings. We are pet owners, not a veterinary practice and not an insurance agency. When a company pays us a commission if you buy through a tracked link, we will say so on the ranking page and in our disclosure. Quotes still belong on the insurer’s site. Premiums vary by ZIP, species, age, breed, and deductible, so we do not invent a “typical U.S. price” when the company does not publish one.

Why compare now, not “someday”

Waiting periods start after you enroll. Accident waits are often short; illness waits are longer; orthopedic waits can be longer still. A puppy or kitten who looks healthy in week one can still develop a condition that later reads as pre-existing if you enroll after the first clinic visit documents it. That is a lifecycle reason to compare in the same week you bring an animal home — not a fabricated recall.

Fall 2026 is also when many households travel for holidays and board pets. Boarding does not replace insurance. It does remind you that injuries happen away from your regular veterinarian. Confirm whether the policy reimburses any licensed U.S. veterinarian, which several of these brands state on public pages.

What we scored (and what we refused to invent)

Our ranking JSON documents the checklist. Quality looks at accident-and-illness base design: hereditary/congenital in the base plan, an official unlimited annual-limit option, exam fees in the base plan, a wellness option, and extras such as dental illness or behavioral care in the base policy. Safety here means policy reliability — state availability and documented mass non-renewals — not clinical veterinary safety. Value looks at customization and any official advertised starting premium. Ease looks at a documented claims path (app, two-day processing claim, or clinic direct-pay).

We did not use NAIC complaint ratios on this pass because we did not verify them for each company. We did not invent customer-satisfaction percentages. Pre-existing-condition exclusions are industry-standard and are not a unique “gotcha” we pretend only one brand uses.

Criteria to use on every quote

Annual limit versus no cap

An annual limit is a ceiling on what the insurer will reimburse in a policy year. Unlimited means there is no annual (and, on Trupanion’s public site, no lifetime or per-condition) payout cap on eligible costs. Unlimited is not the same as “covers everything.” Deductibles, coinsurance, exclusions, and waiting periods still apply.

Deductible design

Annual deductibles reset. Per-incident deductibles can stack if there are multiple issues. Trupanion’s public materials describe a lifetime per-condition deductible: you meet it once per condition. Read the sample policy, not the marketing headline.

Reimbursement (coinsurance)

If a plan reimburses 80% of eligible costs after the deductible, you owe the other 20% plus anything excluded. Some companies let you pick 70%, 80%, or 90%. Lemonade’s order of coinsurance and deductible has been described differently from some rivals in independent coverage; read Lemonade’s current policy for your state rather than assuming every brand subtracts in the same order.

Exam fees, wellness, and accident-only

Exam fees are sometimes in the base plan (Fetch describes sick-visit exam fees that way) and sometimes an add-on (Embrace describes exam fees as optional). Wellness is usually not insurance; it is a routine-care stipend or rider. Accident-only is a cheaper, thinner product. Nationwide’s public $12/month example is an accident-only sample quote, not a typical accident-and-illness price.

The six verified plans

Embrace Pet Insurance

Embrace’s public coverage pages describe accident-and-illness policies with hereditary and congenital conditions when they are not pre-existing, dental illness (up to $1,000 per year on their coverage page), and vet-supervised behavioral therapy as standard on those policies. Wellness Rewards is optional. Exam fees and some prescription-drug coverage are described as add-ons. Embrace’s 2026 cost page gives a typical dog range of $20–$70/month, not a single nationwide starting price. Claims are reimbursement-based. We did not independently time “lightning-fast claims” marketing.

Healthy Paws

Healthy Paws sells a single accident-and-illness product. Official FAQ language lets you choose $5,000, $7,000, or unlimited annual reimbursement at enrollment; unlimited cannot later be increased if you pick a cap. The coverage page describes reimbursement up to 90% and states that most claims are processed in two days — that is the company’s claim, not a Pet Standings stopwatch study. We did not find a wellness or accident-only product on the official pages we used. Price is quote-only.

Trupanion

Trupanion’s official site describes no annual, lifetime, or per-condition payout caps and payment of up to 90% of eligible costs. The deductible is lifetime per condition. Trupanion Express can pay participating veterinary hospitals directly at checkout. There is no wellness product on the pages we reviewed, and monthly cost is not published as a starting quote. Plan design is less of a menu than Embrace’s customizable limits.

Fetch Pet Insurance

Fetch (formerly Petplan) describes accident-and-illness coverage that includes exam fees to diagnose a covered injury or illness. Physical therapy and acupuncture appear in that base description; Fetch Wellness is optional. U.S. policies are underwritten by AXIS Insurance Company per Fetch disclosures. Fetch cites a common configuration of $10,000 annual limit / $300 deductible / 80% reimbursement. We did not verify an unlimited annual option on Fetch’s official coverage pages. Illness waiting periods are described as 15 days; orthopedic waits can be longer.

Lemonade Pet

Lemonade’s official cost page says policies start at $10/month for basic accident and illness; actual price varies. Lemonade says it pays 50% of eligible claims instantly in the app, with the rest averaging within five days. Add-ons include wellness, vet visit fees, dental, behavioral, physical therapy, and end-of-life. A 2026 NerdWallet review said Lemonade was not sold in every state (42 states plus D.C. in that review). Unlimited annual coverage is not offered in that same review’s description. Confirm your ZIP on Lemonade.

Nationwide Pet Insurance

Nationwide still quotes new policies at petinsurance.com. Public pages describe modular accident-only, accident-and-illness, and add-on wellness, and Nationwide’s newsroom still describes coverage for birds and exotic pets. A sample accident-only quote starts at $12/month for a specified Chicago mixed-breed dog. In June 2024 Nationwide announced it would not renew about 100,000 Whole Pet with Wellness policies; that documented non-renewal is why our reliability score is lower and why we do not assign a “best” badge. Congenital and hereditary coverage is described as an optional rider on reimbursement examples.

Who should start where

If you want customizable limits, dental illness in the base accident-and-illness description, and an optional wellness stipend, start with Embrace’s quote flow and read the sample policy.

If you want an official unlimited annual option on a single accident-and-illness product, start with Healthy Paws — and decide the cap at enrollment.

If you want the vet paid at checkout at a participating hospital and a lifetime per-condition deductible, start with Trupanion and ask your clinic whether Express is enabled.

If sick-visit exam fees in the base description matter more than an unlimited cap, start with Fetch.

If you want an app-first claims story and a published $10 starting price, start with Lemonade and check state availability.

If you need a modular accident-only example or a brand that publicly mentions birds and exotic pets, Nationwide is still selling — with the Whole Pet non-renewal history disclosed on our ranking page.

Honest limits of this guide

We are not quoting your household. We are not your veterinarian. We do not fabricate “9 out of 10 claims paid” figures. Rankings can change when official pages change. After you pick two finalists, download both sample policies, compare waiting periods side by side, and ask the insurer how they treat exam fees and pre-existing conditions in your state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which pet insurers has Pet Standings actually verified?▾

Embrace, Healthy Paws, Trupanion, Fetch, Lemonade, and Nationwide, from public policy pages. Other logos are pending that same checklist.

Do you invent monthly prices?▾

No. Lemonade publishes from $10/month and Nationwide publishes a $12/month accident-only sample. Embrace publishes a 2026 dog range. Others are quote-only on pages we used.

Is wellness the same as comprehensive insurance?▾

No. Wellness riders help with routine care. Accident-and-illness is the medical product for injuries and illnesses that are not excluded.

Will this article file a claim for me?▾

No. We are editors, not the insurer. The sample policy for your state controls.

Do you get paid if I buy a policy?▾

We may earn a commission from tracked links on our ranking page. We still only card the six verified companies.
