Why it is listed

Start with AKC when you want a free U.S. registry quiz plus a filterable official breed list (activity, barking, coat, size, trainability). Use matches as research starters — not temperament guarantees. Consider shelters and Meet the Breeds for real dogs.

Pros & cons

• akc.org/dog-breeds companion encyclopedia 2026-09-07: This is the official list of all American Kennel Club dog breeds. Filter Breeds by Group (Sporting through Foundation Stock Service), Activity Level, Barking Level, Characteristics collections (e.g. Hypoallergenic, Best Family Dogs, Best Dogs For Apartment Dwellers), Coat Type, Shedding, Size, and Trainability. Compare Breed cards appear on the list. Breed standards originate with AKC-recognized parent clubs.
• U.S. registry educational surface: free quiz + free encyclopedia with breed profiles. No kit purchase required to use the selector.

Cons

• A lifestyle quiz match is marketing guidance from AKC’s tool — not a veterinary behavioral assessment and not a guarantee of an individual dog’s temperament. Meet dogs in person (e.g. Meet the Breeds events) before you commit.
• Selector meta copy does not print a scientific accuracy percent; we do not invent one. Purebred focus — mixed-breed / shelter dogs still need individual evaluation.
• AKC Marketplace and breeder referral are separate products (see dog-breeders). This row ranks research tools only.
